‘It is a long journey’ Martinelli reacts as Arsenal drops more points

Gabriel Martinelli has voiced his disappointment after Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 against Aston Villa, further denting their chances in the Premier League title race.

The Gunners were fully aware of the importance of this match, especially after Liverpool secured a late win against Brentford earlier in the day. With that result in mind, Arsenal knew they needed all three points to keep pace in the title race.

The match carried added significance as Unai Emery’s Aston Villa had dealt a crushing blow to Arsenal’s title hopes last season by winning at the Emirates. Determined to avoid a repeat, Arsenal set out to complete the double over Villa, having already beaten them at Villa Park earlier this campaign.

By the hour mark, it seemed Arsenal were cruising, leading 2-0 and in control of the game. However, Villa proved why they are such a dangerous side, storming back with two quick goals to level the score. Arsenal pushed hard in the closing stages, but their relentless pressure failed to yield a legitimate winner, leaving the home fans frustrated.

Reflecting on the match, Martinelli acknowledged the disappointment of the result but urged his teammates to keep their focus on the challenges ahead. Speaking to Premier League Productions, he said:

Ian Wright says Arsenal should have known Villa always had comeback ability

Ian Wright has expressed his frustration with Arsenal’s inability to secure victory in their 2-2 draw against Aston Villa this evening, criticising the Gunners for underestimating their opponents’ ability to mount a comeback.

Mikel Arteta’s side faced a strong Villa team that has consistently caused them problems in recent seasons. Under Unai Emery’s management, the Villans notably derailed Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge last season with a shocking win at the Emirates. Although Arsenal triumphed at Villa Park earlier in this campaign, tonight’s draw was another reminder of how dangerous Villa can be.

The Gunners started the match brightly, storming into a 2-0 lead, and it appeared they were on course for an important victory. However, in a dramatic turn of events, Villa clawed their way back into the game, equalising to secure a 2-2 draw and leaving the Emirates crowd stunned.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Wright lamented Arsenal’s inability to see the game through, highlighting the need to respect Villa’s quality. He said:

“It was so comfortable at 2-0, but at the back of your mind you knew Aston Villa were capable of coming back. Arsenal couldn’t break through Villa as they’re a quality side in that respect. You have to be able to see them off.”

Arsenal Women’s Kathrine Kuhl in talks with Italian Serie 1 club Roma ref potential move.

Arsenal Women’s midfielder Kathrine Kuhl is at the center of transfer speculation as the January window unfolds. The Danish international, who joined the Gunners in January 2023, is reportedly in talks with Serie A club Roma over a potential move.

This development comes after a challenging period for Kuhl at Arsenal, where she has struggled for playing time this season, managing only seven minutes in the Women’s Super League. Kuhl’s journey at Arsenal has been a mix of promise and setbacks. Initially hailed as one of Europe’s brightest prospects, she made 18 appearances for the club in her first half-season. However, the 2023/24 campaign has seen her opportunities limited, leading to speculation about her future.

The potential move to Roma is significant, with reports suggesting it could be an Italian record transfer at around 100,000 Euros.  This valuation underscores Kuhl’s potential, despite her recent lack of playing time. Roma, owned by the same group as Everton, appears to have edged ahead in the race for her signature, according to the BBC’s Emma Saunders.

Have heard similar re: Roma’s pursuit of Kathrine Kuhl.

Interestingly, the owners Friedkin Group, also own Everton, who have also been pursuing Kuhl and have made an approach.

David Raya – 5.5
Raya made some important saves but looked shaky and lacked confidence, which unsettled his defence.

Thomas Partey – 4.5
A poor performance from Partey, who almost gifted Watkins a goal with a disastrous throw-in and allowed the striker to score later on.

Myles Lewis-Skelly – 6.5
Another assured and composed showing from the youngster, who continues to impress.

Gabriel Magalhães – 7.0
Despite the absence of his regular defensive partner, Gabriel handled Watkins well and put in a strong display.

Sloppy Arsenal throw away two goal lead to drop points against Aston Villa

Arsenal dropped more Premier League points in a 2–2 draw against Aston Villa this evening, despite being two goals ahead at one stage.

Fully aware of Villa’s threat, Arsenal started the game by dominating possession, seeking openings in Unai Emery’s well-organised team.

Villa defended resolutely and looked dangerous on the counter-attack whenever the opportunity arose. Ian Maatsen came close to giving Villa the lead, forcing a solid save from David Raya.

Moments later, Leandro Trossard tested Emi Martínez at the other end, with both sides creating chances in a lively opening spell.

Arsenal knew it would take more to break down Villa’s stubborn defence, and Gabriel Martinelli eventually opened the scoring despite Martínez’s best efforts.

Can Gooners get 1st London derby win of 2025? Arsenal Women team news & predicted lineup.

The WSL has returned, and on Sunday Arsenal Women will be back in action. Last week, they were set to kick off the year with the FA Cup Round 4 clash against Bristol City FC, but that game was postponed due to a frozen Meadow Park pitch, and has been rescheduled 29th January.

Our London rivals, Crystal Palace Women, make the short trip to Meadow Park to take on our girls. The expectation among us Gooners is that we are starting 2025 with a London derby win. For that, we expect head coach Renee Slegers to field her strongest lineup.

Team News:

With Lia Walti, Laura Wienroither, and Kim Little all in training, Arsenal have almost every player available.

Of the players likely to miss the game, Kathrine Kuhl (closing in on an AS Roma exit), Freya Godfrey, Maddy Earl, Viv Lia (who has joined Southampton on a loan deal), and Laila Harbert were all not in training on Friday.

Confirmed Arsenal team to face Aston Villa – Martinelli starts over Sterling

Arsenal welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates this evening, knowing that they simply cannot drop points in their bid to stay in the title race. This is the team that Mikel Arteta has gone with.

We all know that Arsenal won the reverse fixture earlier in the season, but we also remember what Villa did to us last season and what it cost us. This is a huge game by any metric for both sides.

Villa will be desperate to get something from their visit to North London to maintain their push for a Champions League spot, while Arsenal know full well that they must pick up maximum points if they are to stay in the title race. A defeat is unthinkable.

Arsenal are the favourites, of course; they are the better team and have home advantage. But that was also the case last season at the Emirates, and the Villans managed to take all three points then. They will no doubt feel confident they can do the same again today.

Arsenal are fresh off a satisfying North London derby win over Tottenham, so no one can say they don’t have some momentum. However, losses to Newcastle United and Manchester United (on penalties) do show that Arsenal are not unbeatable at home.

Arsenal will have to be wary of this Villa player that ran our midfield in the reverse fixture.

Off the back of the North London derby success, Arsenal will be hoping to maintain the momentum with a win against Aston Villa as we play host to them this evening. The last time we welcomed them to the Emirates Stadium, at the back end of last season, they inflicted a loss that eventually proved costly, as we missed out on the Premier League title by just two points. Arsenal got a bit of revenge earlier this campaign with a 2–0 win in the reverse fixture, but the real payback should come in the form of a league double, just as they did to us last season. Looking at their current squad, the obvious threat to us will be Ollie Watkins, especially after scoring a match-winner midweek. Even in our earlier meeting this season, he was a huge threat to our backline, and he could have scored a few goals had it not been for very poor finishing.

That said, however, I just don’t see him as the biggest threat from a Villa standpoint—not the one we should worry about most. With such quality within their ranks, we have to accept they have players who can hurt you, especially when you’re not at your best. One such player is Morgan Rogers. If we remember our first meeting of the season, then we’ll know just how good a player he is.

Rogers ran our midfield ragged at times in that encounter, which is something very few players can do against this Arsenal side. He was electric that day, creating chaos with his exceptional dribbling and close control. It should come as no surprise that he finished the game with more successful dribbles (5) than any other player. I think he’ll be our biggest threat, but it’s not solely due to his performance in the reverse fixture—he’s also currently their most in-form player (arguably)! This is a result of five goal involvements (three goals and two assists) in his last five appearances in all competitions.

Keeping him quiet will be a telling factor in whether we win or not, so it’s absolutely imperative that we do so. A lot of the conversation has been about our need to score more goals, but good defending and keeping clean sheets are just as crucial to our success. We must limit their chances!

‘He is obligated to go’ Arteta urges Arsenal star to take a break from football

Mikel Arteta has encouraged Bukayo Saka to take a well-deserved holiday as he recovers from his injury, advising the young star to step away from football temporarily to rejuvenate both mentally and physically.

Saka, who is facing two months on the sidelines, has been a model of consistency and fitness over recent seasons, rarely encountering long-term injuries. However, his relentless schedule for both club and country has meant the 23-year-old has had little opportunity to rest.

Arteta sees Saka’s enforced absence as a chance for the winger to recharge. Speaking to the Daily Mail, the Arsenal manager emphasised the importance of rest for the player’s long-term wellbeing:

“Yeah, he needs to (go on holiday). He is obligated to go. With his girlfriend or his family, he can choose. Or on his own.

“But he needs to get away for a few days and refresh.

Emery explains why this match will be different from last season

Unai Emery shocked the Emirates last season by masterminding an Aston Villa victory over Arsenal, a result that dealt a significant blow to the Gunners’ hopes of lifting the Premier League trophy.

That win for Villa not only boosted their chances of securing Champions League football but also effectively ended Arsenal’s title bid. The Gunners ultimately fell short on the final day of the season, leaving fans to rue what might have been if they had secured three points in that fixture against Villa.

This weekend, Villa return to North London and Arsenal faces the challenge of preventing a repeat of last season’s disappointment. The Gunners remain in pursuit of Liverpool in the title race, and every match is a must-win if they are to close the gap on the league leaders.

Villa, meanwhile, are battling to improve their form and keep their hopes of European qualification alive. Despite their struggles this season, they remain a dangerous opponent under Emery, who is keen to build on his side’s past success at the Emirates.

Speaking ahead of the match, Emery downplayed comparisons to last season’s encounter, emphasising the changed circumstances for both teams. As quoted by Arsenal Media, he said:
“This is different circumstances [to Villa’s win at the Emirates last season]. That moment was a very special circumstance for them and for us because they were very involved in the Champions League against Bayern Munich, and we were as well in the Conference League.

“Very disappointed” Ian Wright reacts to Arsenal’s draw at Brighton

Arsenal missed an opportunity to close the gap on Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table after being held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton this evening. The Gunners entered the match knowing they could pile pressure on Liverpool, who face Manchester United tomorrow, but their failure to secure all three points leaves them trailing in the title race.

Brighton, known for their resilience, presented a tricky challenge. However, Arsenal had every reason to approach the game with confidence after their recent victory over Brentford. The Gunners began the match strongly, taking an early lead and dominating the first half with composed play and control in possession. Despite their promising start, the second half told a different story.

The game shifted when Arsenal conceded a penalty, allowing Brighton to equalise and wrestle momentum from the visitors. From that point, the Seagulls grew in confidence and posed a significant threat, with Arsenal struggling to retain possession or regain control. Brighton came close to snatching victory, exploiting Arsenal’s lack of composure in key moments.

The result was a bitter disappointment for fans, as well as club legend Ian Wright, who spoke candidly about the match. Reflecting on Arsenal’s performance on Premier League Productions, Wright said: “Very disappointed with the way it panned out. You take the draw and you move on, there’s not a lot you can do about it. I think in the end, the second half, you look at the bench and there’s not too much apart from Odegaard and Martinelli. You just need a little bit more firepower than that.”

Wright’s comments highlight a recurring issue for Arsenal—depth and firepower off the bench. While the team has shown moments of brilliance this season, such matches underline the importance of strengthening their squad to maintain momentum in critical games.

Arteta admits ‘it wasn’t our best day’ after Brighton draw

Mikel Arteta has admitted that his Arsenal team were simply not good enough after they dropped points in a 1-1 draw at Brighton this evening. The Gunners went into the match knowing they had an opportunity to close the gap to the top of the Premier League table to just three points, with Liverpool not scheduled to play until tomorrow. However, they failed to capitalise on the chance, leaving their title hopes dented.

Arsenal started the game brightly and took the lead following an impressive opening spell. However, the match turned when they conceded a penalty, which allowed Brighton to equalise and shifted the momentum of the contest. The Seagulls took the initiative, and Arsenal seemed visibly shaken by the loss of their lead. This lack of composure was reflected in their continued loss of possession and inability to regain control of the match.

Set pieces, a strength for Arsenal this season, were poorly executed on the night, which further compounded their struggles. As a result, the Gunners failed to find the decisive edge and had to settle for just a point in a match they were widely expected to win. This result marks the second time Arsenal have failed to beat Brighton this season, raising questions about their consistency against mid-table opposition.

Reflecting on the game, Arteta expressed his disappointment with the performance and acknowledged his team’s shortcomings. Speaking to Premier League Productions, he said: “Disappointed because we want to win the game, and we started with some good actions and a really good goal. We knew it was going to be competitive and challenging. We did compete, but it wasn’t our best day.”

This draw serves as a reminder that Arsenal must show greater determination and focus if they are serious about winning the league. Failing to beat Brighton over the course of two fixtures does not reflect the mentality required of title challengers. Arteta’s side will need to learn from this setback and find ways to raise their performance levels in matches where points cannot afford to be dropped. With the title race still alive, every result matters, and performances like this will need to be left behind if Arsenal hope to end their season on top.

Arsenal dropped two points on their trip to Brighton this evening, a result that could have far-reaching consequences for the title race. Here are our player ratings:

Player Ratings

David Raya – 6.5
There was little he could do about the penalty, and Brighton’s wastefulness meant he wasn’t tested much throughout the game.

Thomas Partey – 6.0
Solid in the first half but faded as Brighton gained control. Could have done better in key moments when Arsenal needed more composure.

William Saliba – 6.5
Conceded an unfortunate penalty but was otherwise composed and dealt well with Brighton’s dangerous forwards.

Gabriel – 7.0
A strong performance, ensuring Brighton didn’t create clear-cut chances. His physical presence was key to Arsenal’s defensive efforts.

Disappointing Arsenal drop two more points in title race after Brighton draw

Arsenal played out a 1-1 draw on their trip to the Amex Stadium against Brighton this evening, delivering a significant blow to their title ambitions.

Title-chasing Arsenal started the match in fine form, causing Brighton all sorts of problems early on, with Gabriel Jesus’ tame shot being comfortably saved.

However, Ethan Nwaneri opened the scoring shortly afterwards, following a superb pass from Mikel Merino.

The teenager once again demonstrated why he is more than just hype. But Arsenal knew how dangerous Brighton could be, and the Seagulls began probing for an equaliser.

Simon Adingra came very close to scoring for Brighton, but he lost his balance at the crucial moment, allowing Arsenal to escape unscathed.

Confirmed Arsenal team to face Brighton – Rice starts, Odegaard on bench

Arsenal travel to the American Express Stadium this evening to face Brighton & Hove Albion, and this is the team Mikel Arteta has gone with.

Right now, Arsenal is in exceptional form, riding high on a nine-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League, while Brighton has struggled to find their rhythm, winless in their last seven league matches.

Under Arteta, the Gunners have been impressive, most recently securing a 3-1 victory over Brentford. This win has solidified their position in second place with 39 points, just six behind league leaders Liverpool.

Brighton, managed by Fabian Hürzeler, sits in 10th place with 27 points. Despite their recent struggles, the Seagulls have shown resilience, drawing five of their last seven games. Their most recent match ended in a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, proving they can compete with top teams, even during a winless stretch.

The last meeting between these two sides ended in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium, with Kai Havertz and João Pedro both finding the back of the net. Arsenal has the upper hand in recent encounters, remaining unbeaten in their last three Premier League meetings with Brighton.

Arsenal reignites their interest in Feyenoord’s goal machine

Arsenal has reignited their interest in Santiago Gimenez, and this time, the Gunners may finally have the opportunity to secure the Feyenoord striker.

Gimenez has established himself as one of the top goal-scorers in European football over the last few seasons, maintaining impressive consistency. The Gunners had previously been expected to make a move for him last summer, but they opted to focus on signing Benjamin Sesko, a deal that ultimately fell through. Now, at the end of this season, Mikel Arteta’s team is once again in the market for a new striker, and this time, Gimenez has emerged as a strong option.

According to a report from Sport Witness, Arsenal is one of several clubs showing interest in the Mexican forward, who has six goals from just nine games so far this season. At just 23 years old, Gimenez presents an exciting long-term investment for Arsenal, who could add a promising striker to their squad for the future.

The Mexican international has been one of the best strikers in Europe for some time, and with his ability to score consistently, he could offer the Gunners a reliable option up front. Moreover, Gimenez might be content with a role on the bench initially, where he could continue to develop and wait for his chance to make an impact at a top club like Arsenal.

With his impressive form and potential for growth, signing Gimenez could prove to be a valuable addition to the squad. However, other Premier League clubs are also reportedly interested in the striker, meaning Arsenal could face stiff competition for his signature. To avoid missing out, the Gunners may need to act swiftly to secure the 23-year-old’s services and add a talented young striker to their ranks before another club swoops in.

Report – Arsenal is ready to offer €55m for Serie A forward

Arsenal is one of the clubs keeping a close eye on Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui as he continues to impress with his goal-scoring form in Serie A. The Gunners have a number of top attacking options in their current squad, but manager Mikel Arteta remains keen on further strengthening his attacking options to increase their chances of success in the Premier League and other competitions.

Arsenal has long been in search of a striker who can consistently hit the 20-goal mark each season, and Retegui could be the answer to that need. The 25-year-old forward joined Atalanta this season, and he has quickly become a key player for the Italian side, scoring an impressive 12 goals in 17 matches so far. His performances have garnered attention from top clubs across Europe, including Arsenal, who see the potential in Retegui to bolster their attack.

Atalanta, known for developing talented players and willing to sell them at the right price, could be open to parting ways with Retegui if an attractive offer comes in. The striker has enjoyed a strong start to his career in Bergamo, and while he remains focused on continuing his development at Atalanta, the prospect of a move to the Premier League could appeal to him.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Arsenal is one of several clubs expressing interest in signing Retegui, with the Gunners reportedly prepared to pay as much as €55 million to secure his signature. The second half of the season presents Retegui with an opportunity to further enhance his reputation and potentially attract more suitors, including Arsenal, who could make a move for him in the summer.

Retegui’s form this season has made him one of the standout strikers in Europe, and with the right backing and development, he could become an even more lethal force in the years to come. Should Arsenal decide to pursue him, signing the Argentine forward could prove to be a wise investment for the future of their attack, strengthening their options in front of goal as they continue their push for domestic and international success.

“When you see the record” Arteta is expecting a tough game at the Amex

Mikel Arteta has faced Brighton several times as Arsenal’s manager, and over the years, the Spaniard has come to understand just how challenging the Seagulls can be as an opponent. As the Gunners prepare for their encounter with Brighton this weekend, they are fully aware of the threat that Fabian Hurzeler’s team poses. With Liverpool not playing until tomorrow, this match presents a crucial opportunity for Arsenal to keep the pressure on the Premier League leaders and continue their pursuit of the title.

Brighton has established itself as one of the bravest teams in the Premier League in recent years. Their fearless approach to every game, regardless of the opponent, has earned them admiration from across the league. Whether facing the top clubs or mid-table sides, Brighton’s high pressing, tactical flexibility, and hunger to compete have made them a constant danger. Despite their solid squad, they often punch above their weight, making them a tough side to break down.

For Arsenal, this match is important on multiple levels. The Gunners are aiming to find top form as they head into 2025, and a victory against Brighton would be a massive confidence booster as they push for the title. However, the task will not be easy. Brighton’s resilience and quality on the ball mean that Arsenal cannot afford to be complacent. The Seagulls will relish the chance to take on one of the Premier League’s top sides, and Arsenal knows they will have to be at their best to overcome them.

Ahead of the game, Arteta spoke about the challenge Brighton represents, and his admiration for their style of play was clear. As quoted by Arsenal Media, Arteta said:

“They’re a really tough opponent. When you see the record they have at home, the way of playing, the capacity to adapt to different shapes, it’s really impressive. I think he’s done something slightly different to before and I really like them. I really enjoy what they’ve done.”

Boost for Arsenal as Brighton will be without several key players

Arsenal has been handed a boost ahead of their match against Brighton today, as the Seagulls are missing some key players.

Brighton is one of the teams that give the big clubs a run for their money, and they will be eager to prove their worth against Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side has been in good form, having secured a 3-0 victory over Brentford in their last Premier League outing, but they are aware that Brighton could prove to be tough opponents.

The Gunners would be delighted with the fitness news coming from the Amex, as Arsenal Media reports that Brighton is missing several key players for this fixture. The report claims that this game has come too soon for the likes of Danny Welbeck, Evan Ferguson, Adam Hinshelwood, James Milner, and Ferdi Kadioglu to feature.

These players are significant figures for the Seagulls, and their absence could have a considerable impact on Brighton’s performance, potentially making Arsenal’s task easier. Welbeck and Ferguson, for example, have been regular contributors in attack, while Milner’s experience in midfield and Kadioglu’s versatility are also important for Brighton.

However, every team faces injury problems at this point in the season, and Arsenal cannot afford to become complacent despite Brighton’s weakened squad. The Gunners need to treat the game with respect and approach it as though they are facing the most potent team in the Premier League.

Wolves make a statement move after Arsenal adds Cunha to their shopping list

Arsenal has reportedly expressed interest in adding the in-form Matheus Cunha to their squad during this January transfer window.

The Gunners already boast some of the best players in England, but Mikel Arteta is eager to further strengthen his squad for the crucial second half of the season. While Gabriel Jesus has rediscovered his goalscoring touch, the team is currently without Bukayo Saka, which has heightened the need for attacking reinforcements.

Cunha, who has been in fantastic form for Wolves, has emerged as a potential target. Despite Wolves’ struggles with relegation during the first half of the season, the Brazilian forward has stood out as one of their best performers. His contributions have naturally attracted the attention of top clubs, including Arsenal.

However, Wolves are determined to retain their key player and are reportedly taking steps to prevent a January exit. According to The Daily Mail, the Midlands club has begun talks to extend Cunha’s contract. They are prepared to offer him an improved deal, which would also lengthen the expiry date on his current contract. This move is aimed at protecting Wolves’ interests and making it more difficult for a club like Arsenal to acquire Cunha during this window.

Arsenal’s interest in the forward is understandable, given the circumstances. However, Wolves’ reluctance to sell mid-season means that the Gunners may have to wait until the summer to pursue the Brazilian further. Selling a key player in January is a challenge for most clubs, and Wolves appear determined to retain their star man as they battle to secure their Premier League status.
